I was honestly surprised that I hadn’t reviewed this beer yet. I’ve gushed before about how I think that Drifter are doing some amazing stuff, and this one is no different. It was one of the first I tried of theirs and it’s become quite the staple.
Name: The Stranded Coconut
Country: Cape Town, South Africa
Style: Pale Lager (special)
Rating: 4 / 5
This brew is a pale lager but with some toasted coconut added. How’s that for transforming your crappy work day into visions of paradise?
It pours gold with thick creamy head. On the nose it’s very subtle. There’s a bit of your typical lager aromas – bread, biscuit, but with some slight tropical notes. It’s very lightly hopped so you don’t really get those aromas.
The beer is seriously smooth and silky. It’s subtle and initially the coconut is only just on the end of the sip. But as you have a few more sips, you start picking it up earlier. It’s flavourful but really easy to drink and enjoy. I reckon Drifter wanted this to be a very accessible beer but I would have loved a bit more coconut. It’s such a great combination of flavours.
If you haven’t tried this yet – do yourself a favour and get on that. Drifter have also released a gift pack (with all 4 of their regular brews) which is available at Checkers Liquor. Go on, do it. You won’t regret it.
