Remember a while back the Brewdog Elvis Juice came out? Everyone was going bananas (or grapefruits) about it. Well…. I wasn’t. I thought I must be the only person who wasn’t praising that beer. Honestly, I thought it tasted like grapefruit flavoured liqui-fruit, not beer. Anyway… this special little bottle is also a grapefruit IPA and it’s the 8th beer in our Advent Calendar.
Name: Grapefruit Express
Brewery: Devil’s Peak
Country: Cape Town, South Africa
Style: American IPA (special)
Rating: 3.75 / 5
Righto, first off what’s the deal with grapefruit IPA’s at the moment? I’ll tell ya. Because we’re all chasing not just hop flavours but also bitterness, and because a lot of hops already have grapefruit like aromas, it seems a natural addition to an IPA. The promise of grapefuit is that zest-like bitterness that also adds a heck of a lot of natural flavour.
On the pour this one is bright and golden (almost amber). It’s got plenty of frothy head. It has the most amazing aroma – it’s so deep and full of grapefruit that I wish I could bottle it and wear it as perfume. It’s so fresh and zesty.
The flavours are juicy with plenty of bitterness, but I think because of the grapefruit additions, the “beeriness” here is also lost a little. I’m not complaining mind you because I could drink 5 of these and not get bored. They’re seriously refreshing and a great summer brew.
