Sorry I’ve been so quiet guys – it’s been manic here. We moved house, I turned 30 and work has been crazy!
In any case, let’s get to another beer to try.
Name: Chocolate Stout
Country: South Africa
Style: Chocolate stout
Rating: 3.5 / 5
I’ve been seeing these Birkenhead’s in my local Liquor City for a while, but had never picked any up until recently. They have a fair variety (that I could see) including a lager, ale (seems to be an amber ale), honey blonde and this chocolate stout.
I don’t know about you, but there’s just something special about stout – and chocolate stout is just wonderful when it’s done right.
This stout pours out pitch black (check), it has a warm coffee and chocolate aroma (check) and the flavours are a mix between sweet and dry (check). It had great head while pouring, but it dissipated quite quickly. The flavours and aromas were on point – definitely a lovely stout.
The only slight issue I had was that the carbonation was a little lower that I’d have liked. They are meant to have a low carbonation level, but I felt like it was lower than normal.Other than that, a really decent chocolate stout! I’m looking forward to seeing more from these guys.
P.S. It might be my OCD showing – but it really annoys me that some of their range has a name (e.g. Laughing Croc, Pride) but most are named after the style. I don’t know what the “Pride” is… #justsaying
